YKK vs RIRI Zippers in Leather Bags: A Real Comparison

If you make leather bags or wallets long enough, you'll eventually hit the YKK vs RIRI question. The short answer: both are excellent. The long answer is where the real decision lives.

Two leather bags side by side comparing a YKK Excella aluminum-tooth zipper with a RIRI Decor solid brass-tooth zipper.
YKK Excella vs RIRI Decor: similar from across the room, very different in the hand.

The two brands at a glance

YKK is the Japanese giant that makes the majority of the world's zippers. Their range spans from disposable garment zips to the Excella series, an aluminum-tape luxury zipper used by serious leather workshops.

RIRI is Swiss, much smaller, and focused almost exclusively on the premium and luxury market. Their Decor line is the metal zipper of choice across most European luxury houses.

Construction differences

Teeth

YKK Excella uses polished interlocking aluminum teeth with very tight tolerances. RIRI Decor uses solid brass or nickel teeth with a slightly heavier, more architectural profile.

Tape

YKK uses a tightly woven polyester tape that's strong and slightly stiff. RIRI's cotton-blend tape is softer and drapes better against fine leather, which matters on unlined wallets and small leather goods.

Slider feel

This is the one most makers notice immediately. RIRI sliders have a deliberate, weighted action with very little side-to-side play. YKK Excella is smoother and faster, but feels less mechanical.

Cost

  • YKK Excella, 18cm: roughly $4–$8 per piece.
  • RIRI Decor M6, 18cm: roughly $14–$28 per piece.

For a wallet selling at $200, that's a meaningful margin difference. For a $1,200 bag, it disappears into the build.

When to choose each

Choose YKK Excella when:

  • You're building a high-quality bag at an accessible price point.
  • You need wide color and size availability.
  • You want a smoother, lighter action — for example, on a frequently used main compartment.

Choose RIRI when:

  • You're positioning a true luxury product.
  • You want a heavier, more deliberate slider feel as a tactile signal of quality.
  • You need it to match precious-metal-finished hardware (RIRI's finish palette is broader at the top end).

Mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing finish temperatures. A warm antique brass zipper looks wrong against cool nickel buckles. Lock the finish family before you order.
  • Ignoring slider weight. A heavy slider on a tiny coin pouch feels overbuilt and pulls the bag out of shape.
  • Buying counterfeit YKK. The Excella line is widely faked. Buy from authorized distributors and check the slider engraving.

Key takeaways

  • YKK Excella and RIRI Decor are both premium choices; neither is "wrong."
  • RIRI's heavier action and softer tape suit luxury small leather goods.
  • YKK Excella offers better availability, color range, and price-to-quality at the upper-mid tier.
  • Match finish family across all hardware before you commit to materials.
