Coil vs Metal vs Vislon Zippers: Which Should You Use on Leather?

By The Editors9 min read
Side-by-side comparison of coil, metal, and molded Vislon zippers installed on tan leather panels in a workshop.

Every zipper on a leather bag belongs to one of three families: coil, metal tooth, or molded plastic (Vislon). Each one drapes, sounds, and ages differently on leather — and picking the wrong family is the fastest way to make a well-made bag feel wrong.

The three families at a glance

Coil zippers

A continuous nylon or polyester monofilament coiled along the tape. Lightweight, self-healing (the coil re-meshes after minor snags), and the softest to sew. This is what YKK calls the CFC / CN series.

Metal zippers

Individual brass, nickel, or aluminum teeth clamped to a woven tape. Heavier, stronger under lateral load, and the traditional choice for premium leather goods (see our YKK vs RIRI comparison).

Vislon (molded plastic)

Chunky injection-molded polyacetal teeth. Rugged, corrosion-proof, and visually the boldest — Vislon is what you see on outdoor jackets, moto bags, and technical carry.

Which zipper for which project?

  • Wallets, card cases, small pouches: coil. A #3 or #5 coil drapes against 1.0–1.2mm leather without warping the panel.
  • Briefcases, totes, dress bags: metal. Solid brass teeth patina to match antique brass hardware and lock the bag's silhouette into place.
  • Weekenders, moto bags, technical carry: Vislon or waterproof coil. Both survive weather and rough handling — see our waterproof zippers guide for the tradeoffs.
  • Backpacks with curved panels: coil. The self-healing coil follows a curved zipper opening that would bind on a metal chain.

Common mistakes

  • Metal zippers on curved openings. The rigid chain fights the curve and the slider jams. Reserve metal for straight runs.
  • Coil on heavy weekenders. Under load the coil can split. Match zipper strength to bag weight.
  • Mixing zipper family with hardware tone. Vislon black next to warm antique brass reads as a hardware store mistake. Keep finish families consistent (see our antique vs polished brass guide).

Key takeaways

  • Coil for lightness, drape, and small leather goods.
  • Metal for structure, tradition, and dress leather.
  • Vislon for weather resistance and technical bags.
  • Match zipper family to bag silhouette first, aesthetic second.
